Last Friday Mike Treleaven the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Totnes Constituency was delighted to welcome Liberal Democrat Farming spokesperson, Andrew George M.P. to the constituency. They visited Alistair Freeth's dairy farm at Diptford where they met several members of the local farming community to discuss the issues affecting farmers at the moment including the lingering effects of Foot and Mouth disease, the review of the Common Agricultural Policy and the increasing incidence of Bovine TB.
Commenting on the visit Mike Treleaven said
' Visits such as these are essential to improve our understanding of the problems facing farmers in their day to day work. Farming is an essential part of South Hams life and a vital part of the economy. Not only do farmers provide us with the food we eat but they are custodians of our beautiful countryside.' He continued ' Farmers are going through particularly hard times at the moment with low prices and uncertainties about changes to the Common Agricultural Policy. Andrew was able to talk about his work in fighting for a fair deal for farmers and the important part they play in the life of the community - views which I wholeheartedly endorse.'
