Dear Sir,
I am extremely upset at the decision taken by Torbay Councillors to award themselves large increases in their allowances following a substantial rise in June. Coming at a time when the Council is facing huge budget pressures with difficult decisions to be made and inevitable rises in Council tax, it is both insensitive and untimely.
There is no doubt that Councillors deserve some recompense for the time and hard work they put into Council work. The solution is to take the responsibility for determining these allowances away from Councillors completely. These matters should be judged by an entirely independent body and not be voted upon by those who stand to gain by their actions.
We do not have that completely independent system and Councillors should remember that they represent a large number of pensioners and low paid workers who would be delighted to receive half the leader's allowance. I would urge Councillors to rethink their decision urgently, remember that this is an 'allowance' not a 'salary' and not accept these latest increases.
Yours sincerely,
Mike Treleaven
