Dear Sir,
Your report in Saturday's paper of people denied access to the Taunton meeting on GM crops highlights the huge interest and concern the public have over the issue, and the Government's total disregard for a proper campaign of information and debate.
The future of GM crops is something that affects everyone of us and we have a right to a full debate on the issue based on all the available evidence, including the results of the field trials which have yet to be published. A series of 6 debates held nation wide is a paltry attempt at consultation which prohibits the right to participate of the vast majority of interested people.
It is reported in today's Observer that the nation's supermarkets will not stock GM food 'while consumer antipathy towards the biotech industry remains so entrenched.' Britain's food retailers understand the commercial realities of forcing GM foods onto the British public - it is not commercially viable. It is about time the Government recognised the very serious concerns that people have about commercial growing of GM crops in the UK and eating food based on such crops. A window dressing consultation exercise, such as happened at Taunton, which allowed just 200 people in the West Country to take part, is no way to recognise these concerns.
Yours sincerely,
